Summary

Work by the licensed retail industry’s professional body BII to strengthen its Benchmarking and Accreditation Service – BIIBAS – is now complete and the new-look scheme has been launched.

The scheme has been improved and enhanced following the publication of the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) Framework Code of Practice, which states that all BBPA member companies must have their codes approved under the BIIBAS scheme.

BIIBAS was first launched in 2007 and has offered a service to benchmark pub company codes of practice against set criteria, and to ensure clarity of wording and transparency of business offer. This provides existing and prospective tenants and lessees with a clear understanding of the business relationship they can expect with their pub company.

The BIIBAS Steering Committee, headed up by experienced independent operator Johnny Johnston, has made a number of key changes to the scheme following publication of the BBPA Framework Code. These include a restructure and strengthening of the Benchmarking Committee (which is responsible for accrediting codes of practice), more transparency regarding allegations of breaches of accredited codes of practice and new sanctions which can lead to withdrawal of accreditation.

Johnny said: ‘I welcome the more robust terms of the BBPA Framework Code of Practice and look forward to the end of June when all BBPA pub companies will have a code which has been accredited and is subject to the rules and regulation of BIIBAS. This is a great opportunity for pub companies to set their stall out and to be accountable for abiding by their own terms and undertakings.”

The full rules and regulations of the new improved scheme will shortly be available on the BIIBAS website www.biibas.com. BII is appointing a dedicated member of staff to administer the scheme and provide a single point of contact for all BIIBAS-related enquiries. They can be contacted on 01276 684449.
